Echo on Zoom Calls: Find the Source, Kill the Loop

Echo has one anatomy: someone's speakers are loud enough to re-enter a live microphone, sending the meeting back into itself. The cruel detail — the person causing it usually can't hear it, because their own voice never loops back to them. Fastest resolution: identify whose mic indicator lights while others speak, and get headphones on that person. Second most common cause: one human, two devices, both joined with audio.

1. Identify the culprit from the participants panel

  1. When echo starts, open Participants.
  2. Watch whose mic indicator glows while someone else talks — that open mic is rebroadcasting.
  3. Host: mute suspects one at a time until the echo dies; then ask that person to switch to headphones or mute between turns.
Why this works: the loop needs exactly one open junction. The indicator betrays it because Zoom shows audio being captured — and meeting playback re-entering a mic counts as captured audio.

2. Kill the double-join

  1. Joining from laptop and phone together? Connect audio on one.
  2. On the second device choose Leave computer audio (or decline the audio prompt on mobile).
  3. Same-room colleagues: one device carries audio; everyone else joins muted with volume at zero.
Why this works: two live audio endpoints in one room feed each other endlessly — a hall of mirrors the echo canceller can't fully unwind. One audio connection per physical room is the invariant.

3. Verify echo cancellation isn't bypassed

  1. Open Settings → Audio → Microphone modes.
  2. If Original sound for musicians is active, switch back to Noise removal — or enable its Echo cancellation sub-toggle if you need the mode.
  3. Retest with a colleague.
Why this works: the musician mode suspends the processing chain, echo cancellation included. One participant echoing on every call from every room is this, almost every time.

4. If speakers are non-negotiable, starve the loop

  1. Lower speaker volume to the minimum everyone can follow.
  2. Widen the distance between speakers and mic.
  3. Mute when not talking — an open mic near speakers is the whole disease.
Why this works: cancellation tolerates quiet, distant playback and drowns under loud, close playback. You're keeping the residue inside what the algorithm can absorb.
