Test Your Zoom Audio Before Joining: The 60-Second Routine

1. Run the two-button check

Open Settings → Audio.
Test Speaker — hear the tone; if it lands elsewhere (monitor, sleeping earbuds), fix the output dropdown, not the volume.
Test Mic — speak normally, stop, and listen hard to the playback: distance, hiss, crackle all reproduce for your callers.
Watch the input meter for healthy movement without pinning at max.

Why this works: playback is the only honest mic test — level meters confirm signal exists, not that it sounds like you. Thirty seconds of listening catches what an hour of meter-watching won't.

2. Pin your devices by name

In the same panel, select your actual microphone and speaker explicitly — avoid Same as System if you juggle devices.
Before critical calls, glance at the ^ chevron beside Mute in-meeting: it lists the live devices and switches in two clicks.

Why this works: most day-of failures are device roulette — a Bluetooth headset or dock that grabbed the default overnight. Explicit selection removes the OS's vote.

3. Rehearse at zoom.us/test

Open zoom.us/test in a browser and click Join.
Let the practice meeting walk you through speaker and mic checks in the real meeting UI.
Say a sentence and watch your own audio indicator respond.

Why this works: it exercises the full path — app launch, device handshake, meeting audio — privately. The closest thing to a rehearsal that exists, and it's free of witnesses.

Still stuck?

Meter moves, callers hear nothing? The meeting grabbed a different mic than the test — recheck via the in-meeting chevron.
No devices listed? OS-level permission: check the Microphone privacy list on Windows or macOS.
Everything passes but calls sound bad? The room, not the rig — suppression levels and mic distance are the next stop.
