'I Can See You Talking': When Zoom Sends Silence

This specific misery — your meter moves, the meeting hears nothing — is usually one of three: you're joined without meeting audio (look for a headset icon saying Join Audio in the toolbar), Zoom is metering a different mic than the meeting transmits, or a host mute is pinning you silent. Check the toolbar first: capture and connection are separate systems, and the meter only proves capture.

1. Confirm you joined meeting audio at all

Scan the meeting toolbar's far left: a headset icon reading Join Audio means your audio was never connected.
Click it → Join with Computer Audio.
The icon becomes the familiar mic — now the meter and the meeting describe the same stream.

Why this works: declining the join-audio prompt (or a flaky connection at join) leaves you in spectator audio: Zoom still meters your local mic, which is exactly what makes this failure so confusing.

2. Align the metered mic with the transmitted mic

Click the ^ chevron beside Mute — the live device list shows what the meeting actually uses.
Select your intended mic there, not just in Settings.
Speak and get a thumbs-up from a participant.

Why this works: device changes mid-session can desynchronize what Settings shows from what the call transmits; the chevron list is the meeting's ground truth.

3. Rule out mutes above your pay grade

Check your mic icon: slashed = muted; Alt+A / Cmd+Shift+A toggles.
Webinar or moderated call? Panelists may be centrally muted — use Raise hand or chat to request unmute; Zoom will always show you a consent prompt.
Second device or phone dial-in also joined? Mute or disconnect the twin.

Why this works: hosts can silence you but can't hot-unmute you — Zoom's consent prompt is the tell that a request is waiting. Meanwhile a forgotten second connection can be the 'you' that's muted.
